So if medieval law said an 8yo girl is an adult and could give consent, are we all just gonna be ok with a 24yo marrying an 8yo? The point isn’t to be ok with this, the point is to realize that it’s wrong

But that was how things were back there! You can’t filter a story happening in medival time through modern lens!! I’m not saying it’s okay but we can’t call it rape or sexual assault, or question the validity of consent in such a context!!! It’s unfair to hold a grown up responsible for having sex with an underage girl since that was the social construct of their time and so he is not responsible!!!!

I’ve been informed that medieval canon law puts age of consent for girls at 12 and boys at 14, that power imbalance only counts if the person in power is actively using their power to negate consent, and that I shouldn’t conflate consent to circumstances with consent to sex.
