Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams Set to Star in ‘X-Men’ Spinoff ‘New Mutants’ (Exclusive)

xmenladies:

Fox’s long-awaited X-Men spinoff New Mutants is finally casting up.

Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of The Witch and Split, and Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams have signed on to star in the ensemble young adult superhero movie being directed by Josh Boone.

The movie is headed towards an early July start with a script by Boone and his writing partner, Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt are producing.

New Mutants, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, was the first X-Men comic spinoff, launched in the early 1980s as the franchise began two decades of dominating the comic book industry.

The pic will focus on the angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of teens that include Native American Danielle Moonstar, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Brazilian ladies man Sunspot, a Kentuckian code-named Cannonball and Russian teen Magik. Also in the mix will be an alien named Warlock.

Taylor-Joy will play Magik, a girl who has learned sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel. She is also the sister of Colossus, an X-Man who appeared in Deadpool.

Williams will play Wolfsbane, a girl struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf.

Boone has been eyeing the actresses since last year but was only able pull the trigger on them once the movie was greenlighted earlier this year. New Mutants has a release date of April 13, 2018.

Fox is making serious efforts to find ethnically appropriate actors, conducting wide searches for a Native American to play Moonstar and a South American for Sunspot.

headcanon that it actually is a nightmare for the Cluster to share meals together because, as it turns out, Kala is vegetarian by religion, Nomi is vegan by conviction, Lito blatantly refuses to eat carbs, Capheus discovers that he’s lactose intolerant, Riley is allergic to nuts, and Wolfie plain and simple refuses to eat vegetables because he’s not a rabbit, thank you very much

(cue to Sun elbowing Wolfie when he doesn’t want to eat salad, to which he replies “so Lito is allowed to be picky about fucking pasta but I have to eat grass?” before Kala glares at him. he grabs his fork and points it to Nomi and “no way in hell I’m eating your fucking quinoa”)

(”what’s quinoa?” Capheus has never been more confused in his life)

Pitch was diverse, had a black female lead, addressed topics like rape, feminism, and mental health. It had healthy relationship dynamics. It had SEVERAL great, complex, female characters with agency and narrative. It had good writing and excellent acting. ALL THAT AND IT WAS JUST GETTING STARTED. But it had no following.

Pitch being cancelled should shut down every argument against the prevalence of fandom racism, white feminism and racial bias in entertainment. There is no way in HELL this show should have failed. It had EVERYTHING going for it – EVERYTHING! It just comes back to race, like everydamnthing. If Ginny had been played by a pretty white girl she’d have been everywhere. She’d be the most talked about thing on tumblr with the exact same storylines, personality, love interests and backstory.

It’s hard to imagine there’s ever gonna be another show/film about the first female in major league baseball, but if there is, chances are she’ll be white and watch what happens….

Tumblr can’t be responsible for a show’s failure, it’s not that powerful. But the site at least can start a conversation or a movement. Pitch would’ve gotten cancelled with or without being hot shit on tumblr. BUT if tumblr gave a damn, there could’ve at least been a little fight for it. Petitions, hashtags, anything…something to show it had an audience. Maybe caught the interest of other networks.

I’ve seen what the White Feminists of Tumblr can do when it comes to fighting for a character they think “deserved better ”. Y’all know how to get your discourse to the right people -in a shockingly organized manner.

Well, Ginny Baker deserved better, too. We deserved Ginny Baker. And there’s no “crew ” or “defense squad ” to be seen.

Darren: Before Glee, my main squeeze was my group Starkid. Basically, out of college, my big break was an internet comedy group that changed my life. Starkid was my musical, creative outlet. That’s when I realized I could be a songwriter for a living, which is why I eventually ended up writing songs for Glee. The last songs I wrote was right when I joined Glee. That was the last Billboard record I had. Anyway, that was my outlet for writing songs. Right after Glee, I have a singer-songwriter EP in the can, which I’m waiting to put out later this year. I was originally going to put out the singer-songwriter EP at the same time I put out the Computer Games EP. After being absent for a while, I didn’t want to confuse fans or people who weren’t familiar with myself, to focus on one thing at a time. I have a TV pilot I’ve been in development with for a while. There’s a lot percolating. That’s also why it was important to get Computer Games out, because it’s only three songs. We thought it was cool to put out the songs, tour and let it incubate before we put out a full-length. We’re using the “figuring it out as we go” model.

Why is the Hound so obsessed with Sansa its not like she was the only (former) idealist in Westeros?

Because she’s probably the first person to be kind and empathetic to him since he was a child?

“He was no true knight” was an immensely powerful thing to hear.

I hope no one undersells the sheer impact of that sentence.

Remember, Sandor is an ugly and dangerous man who’s killed people before, so that already cuts out most, if not all, interactions with ladies, who generally don’t interact with men like the Hound’s persona. So no prior ladies can get up-close to engage/challenge Sandor.

Also bear in mind that Sandor loathes all knights for their hypocrisy, so that cuts away any sympathetic/empathetic relationships with knights that could maybe be kind to him (and Sandor alienates all knights back for damn good reason, given Gregor.)

And you have to bear context in mind: Sandor just spilled the biggest life-defining secret to her in an attempt to get her to see the truth behind knights after hearing her try to paper over the unsavory nature of Gregor with “no one could withstand him.”

He reveals a secret and a conspiracy of silence regarding his burns and Gregor to force her to confront the inherent hypocrisy and failure with knighthood in his bones. Gregor failed him by abusing him in the most horrific way, Sandor’s father failed him by papering it up with bed-burning, knighthood failed him by rewarding Sandor’s monster. So many failures.

And what does Sansa do?

Comfort him with a touch upon the shoulder. Validate his pain by empathizing with him. Acknowledge that Gregor was wrong. Tell him that his trauma is real and that knighthood was wrong to reward such a mountain of garbage because “he was no true knight.”

I can’t see any other opportunities for validation of pain and trauma from anyone else. This is the first time Sandor was ever validated as such. This is a monumental point for Sandor regarding his feelings towards Sansa because she actually and actively cared about his feelings.
